Teeth Cleaning: Well Worth It!

Many of our patients don’t particularly care for having their teeth cleaned. We know it isn’t much fun having your teeth and gums poked, prodded, and scraped. But the cleanings at Almeida & Bell Aesthetic Dentistry in Lone Tree are painless, and the benefits far outweigh any drawbacks.

Teeth cleanings begin with a careful examination of your teeth and gums. We look for any obvious decay or early signs of gum disease. This is the part where a hygienist slides a small mirror between the gums and cheeks. If there are any problems, we let the dentist know.

Next, the actual cleaning begins. Plaque is that gunky stuff that accumulates on the teeth. If it isn’t removed, it hardens into tartar, and can lead to tooth decay. We almost always find tartar, because there are always those hard-to-reach places that even the best home dental health routine can’t get.

Once all the tartar is scraped off, we use a special paste to brush your teeth. You’ve probably know it: that gritty toothpaste that, along with a high-power electric brush, gets any remaining tartar off of the teeth. Sometimes patients say they’d like to have a toothpaste like that at home. But it’s pretty harsh stuff. A couple of times a year is okay, but if you used it every day it would wear down the enamel.

We conclude our teeth cleanings by flossing your teeth, followed by a rinse. This might seem redundant, especially since a lot of patients brush and floss before their appointment. But this ensures we get every last bit of debris from the cleaning.

Almedia & Bell Aesthetic Dentistry in Lone Tree urges you to maintain a good home dental health routine, and to see us twice a year for a cleaning and checkup. We’ll answer any questions you might have, and address any issues. We offer general and cosmetic dentistry. Make an appointment with us today.
